We all know the fact that everything taught to us by someone is not always correct. And hence, same goes with the schools and our teachers, they teach us topics written on the  text-books and we just cram up all information being taught to us without ever making an effort to research on the things being taught. Due to this, we never come to know about Things you were taught at schools that are wrong. So, today i am going to burst out 10 such myths with a hope that you learn something out the bookish world. 


False Fact 1:America was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492.

                   

Truth: I know most of you would have been taught that Christopher discovered America.. But hey! It's completely a misguided information, the truth is that Christopher didn't discover America nor was he the first European to explore the land. Actually in 11th Century about 500 Years before Columbus a band of vikings headed by Lief Eriksson were the first people to set foot on the new land and established a settlement.


False Fact 2: The proximity of Earth to the Sun determines the seasons. 

                                    


Truth: I believe that most of you are aware of the fact that earth revolves around the sun. But how many of you know that the revolution of earth has nothing to do with the changing of the seasons on the earth. According the NASA's database its a complete different story, actually the tilt of the earth on its axis is the real cause for the change of seasons not the distance between earth and sun. There are other effects caused due to revolution like eclipses, length of day and night in different seasons, etc.

False Fact 3: The blood that is deoxygenated is blue in color.




Truth: Anatomy one of the very vast topics of science. While studying about the human body many of would have come around the term veins and arteries. There is an infamous myth that the blood that is deoxygenated carried by veins** is blue in color but it is not true, we all know that oxygen-rich blood contains hemoglobin which gives blood its red color but due to less oxygen the different shapes of red blood cell formed darkens the color of blood i.e. 'red'. The blue color of our veins is just an optical illusion(caused by the scattering of blue light more, as a portion red color reflected is absorbed by the blood). The color of Blood is always red. 
**NOTE- Pulmonary veins are the only veins that carry oxygenated blood.

False Fact 4: Chameleons can always blend up with its surroundings.



Truth: The teachers and textbooks have been teaching the fact that chameleons change their skin color to blend in the environment. Well, till some extent it is true but the complete truth is that chameleons only have limited body color options and also they change their body color not to blend in the surroundings but to reflect their mood. 
 
 

False Fact 5: Humans use only 10% of their total brain capacity.




Truth: If you are being taught the same just one time get up and question how much true this theory is. Actually this is a complete myth that originated around 1890s and was being researched upon by Harvard Psychologists William James and Boris Sidis. But after some research with modern tools it was found that- brain is divided into several different parts supporting different functions hence it is not possible that humans only uses 10% of their brains, if so, then the brain won't be able to perform its functions and the fact is well know that brain is the functional unit of life.

False Fact 6: Subhash Chandra Bose died in a plane crash.




Truth: If you are an Indian or ever studied about the Indian history, you might have came across the death of an Indian great leader also known the father of the modern Indian army-Subhash Chandra Bose. There were claims that he had died in a plane crash by the Indian government(after independence). But, when the case was further studied, it was found that there were no reports of any plane crash and actually Subhash Chandra Bose didn't died in a plane crash rather he was missing. The death of Subhash Chandra Bose is still a mystery as no one knows where he was, till date. 


False Fact 7: Electricity was discovered when Benjamin Franklin was struck by lightning.



Truth: You may have heard your physics teacher explaining how Benjamin Franklin discovered electricity when he was struck by lightning. Weren't you surprised- "What the heck, how can a person survive when stuck by lightning." Yeah you were correct actually this is one of the Things you were taught at schools that are wrong which was later corrected by the historians as Benjamin was neither the first person to discover electricity nor was he lightning struck. He was actually one of the persons who observed the the phenomenon closely.

False fact 8: Great wall of china can been seen from space.




Truth: Who hasn't heard about The Great Wall of China. There are many myths related to this wall but the most popular out of them is that it can been seen from space. It can not be seen from space, or even trough lower orbit of the earth. For your information i would like to tell you that no man-made object is visible from space.

False Fact 9: Light Bulb was invented by Edison.



Truth: Now in modern day there is hardly any house that doesn't use the light bulb. From years we have given credit of the invention of light bulb to Edison, but the reality is not the same. Actually the original idea was developed by Humphrey Davy an English chemist around 200 Years before Edison. He proved that when current passed trough wires heats up due to resistance at a certain point it becomes luminous(emitting light). Edison only developed a way to light up the bulb continuous for long hours and the way by which it could be commercially affordable and practically usable.

False Fact 10: Falling of apple on the head of Isaac Newton led to the discovery of gravitation.





Truth: The teacher and school books love to tout out several facts to make the learners or students stay connected and hence one of such fact told by the teachers, is that gravity was discovered by Newton when an apple fell on his head. Which is completely incorrectly mentioned the reality is that Newton saw the apple fall when he was in his orchard but the apple didn't fall on his head and there is no proof of this saying.
